The Board and Executive Management of the Gambling Authority of Botswana held an executive intensive in Kasane to review the regulator's approach to digital risks, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity. Facilitated by Tichaona Zororo, Director of Digital and Cybersecurity Advisory at Enterprise Governance of IT (EGIT), the two-day programme evaluated how emerging technologies are reshaping the African gaming landscape and outlined the board-level leadership required to oversee information security.

Board-Level Governance and Emerging Digital Risks

The Kasane intensive examined how artificial intelligence and cloud-based infrastructure can be integrated into regulatory supervision while mitigating cybersecurity vulnerabilities. Rather than treating technical oversight as an isolated operational duty, the Gambling Authority is embedding digital governance directly into its strategic decision-making framework to manage risks associated with automated betting systems, data privacy, and online gaming platforms.

Parallel to the executive retreat, the Authority has been actively recruiting for an ICT Systems and Infrastructure Officer. The operational role covers enterprise systems, cloud services, network management, firewalls, endpoint protection, and disaster recovery, reflecting a broader internal effort to fortify the regulator's technical infrastructure against cyber threats.

Strengthening African Regulatory Frameworks

As African gambling markets expand digital oversight and consumer-facing services, the Gambling Authority of Botswana aims to align its governance structures with international digital standards. By focusing on leadership capacity and risk preparedness, the Authority is establishing a framework designed to accommodate technological innovation while maintaining strict regulatory oversight across licensed operations.
