21 friends in Belgium to divvy up €121m lottery jackpot

  • A Flemish village in Belgium was the site of the most extraordinary lottery jackpot win
  • 21 friends have won the jackpot and will divvy up the €121m equally between one another
  • The friends gathered on the same day of the event to celebrate their remarkable spot of good fortune

We have all heard about a group of lottery winners turning sour on each other as soon as a jackpot fell. Whether it is a paramour escaping with another lover, or a family falling out over a jackpot potmoney changes people.

Jackpot won in Belgium by 21 friends

Not the 21 friends from a Belgian village who won the eye-watering €121m from EuroMillions, and seem content with their lot, with each standing to pocket about €5.8m. The winners are all part of the Flemish village of Zingem and are now inscribed in one of the most feel-good lottery stories to have ever been published.

Marianne, one of the winners, was interviewed by the AFP, and couldn’t believe her good fortune - winning €5.8m is a lot for the pensioner, who was beyond herself with the news. The money was won on January 30, with the news only spreading over the past few days.

Media reports confirmed that the 21 friends met to celebrate on the very same day that the news was announced, with many speaking openly to reporters. The winners agreed that the money won would indeed make "things easier."

The latest jackpot still fell short of the €168m won in October 2016, but remains one of the largest amounts to have ever been scooped in the country, and certainly the only time 21 people won together.

In other news, a woman in Michigan, the USA, scored a $250,000 payouton her birthday, adding to the almanac of exciting lottery stories that seem almost too good to be true.
